Wet Paint! Ashland Grove

Snow is such a dynamic visual part of scenery. It’s almost never “just white” as it takes on the light or shadows of its surroundings. In a simple scene such as this aspen grove at dusk we have the subtle but complex interplay of so many natural elements interacting. I hope this visual leave the feeling of a late afternoon near solstice before dark, light and dark shadows cast by the waning sun and the moon creating water-like shadows over the sleepy aspen grove.

The snow color takes on the color of the sky creating a vertical balance while the direction and flow of the shadows aligns with the flow of the clouds creating linear continuity. This is the first time in near 10 years I’ve painted a moon into the sky. I hope you can see the fun I had in this creation.
