Wet Paint! Fort Foster #3
It’s only been a few years since I learned about Fauvism. If you’re unfamiliar like I was this is a cool lesser-discussed piece of art history. I encourage you to explore it.
Heavily inspired by Van Gogh. Yet the signature style is bright un-mixed colors, minimal “un-disguised” brush strokes. Playful patterns with minimal palettes. I was doing this sort of stuff before I learned it was an art movement!
This is a “fauvy” portrayal of the Fort Foster pier near sunset. The skyline is inspired by Van Gogh’s “Houses at Auvers 1890”. The vertical patterns of the piers and the shadow they cast breaks up the horizontal continuity of the oceanside into a complex playful dynamic of dark and bright, cold and warm, magenta and yellow.
This is a 20Wx24H and 2” deep canvas with tropical blue underpainting. Once the paint cures it will receive a standout turquoise floating frame. Its radiance helps warm the house during the 2026 snowstorms!
